The idea of commemorating the Holocaust victims by setting a memorial block in the pavement outside the house where they lived last before their deportation to the concentration camp and murder came in 1993/94 from a German artist, Gunter Demnig. In 1995 he placed the first blocks in the streets of Cologne, next in Berlin, and then in other towns and cities in Germany. By 2012, more than 30,000 blocks had been set, in hundreds of European towns. Stolpersteine, concrete cubes of the size 10 x 10 x 10 cm, with an inscription on the top copper plate, invite the passersby to stop and bow in order to be able to read the inscribed name of the victim. These blocks in public space are becoming a constant reminder of the crime committed by the Nazis and their helpers. Since 2011 the blocks have been also set in Olomouc.
